BIOGRAPHY

    Dr. Didier Mauro is a filmmaker (since 1978), professor of film, and sociologist of culture.

    His cinematographic work (more than a hundred creations), largely focused on the international, led him to film the realities of Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Indian Ocean.

     He teaches regularly at the french National Institute of Audiovisual - I.N.A., and at several universities. 

  

The West Indies Cinema Workshop

     He created in 2012 for the Guadeloupe Education League, The West Indies Cinema Workshop (film training, masterclass, and conferences-projections - debates), paired with the association Vues d'Afrique (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), organized in association with the Caraïbes Cinema Mission, renewed every year, which welcomes students from Guadeloupe and Martinique.

    In 2018, Mrs Miera Savy and him founded in Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles, The Indian Ocean Cinema Workshop.

    As cinema theorist, he has synthesized his decades of practice in a reference book: Praxis du cinéma documentaire, une théorie & une pratique (Publibook editions).

    He is the author of numerous anthropological works devoted mainly to Madagascar and Africa. He notably designed and directed the Encyclopedia of Travel - Madagascar, for the prestigious Gallimard editions, bringing together a team of academics from all regions of this country. 

 

    In the field of solidarity, he manages development actions at the international level, and has dedicated three decades of commitment to Madagascar, in the fields of education for all and culture.

    In particular, he organized for the National Institute of Audiovisual - I.N.A. (as Mission Officer) the Plan for the Safeguarding of Audiovisual Memory (50 years of cinema and television).

    He also reorganized the League of Education of Madagascar Tsimialonjafy.

    Holder of three doctorates in art sciences (University of Paris III – Sorbonne) and a master’s degree in ethnology and comparative sociology (University of Paris X & CNRS), he is qualified as a university lecturer, and holder of the Professional Film Director Card (C.N.C./French Ministry of Culture). 

  

    At the suggestion of professors Jacques Faublée, Pierre Vérin, he was elected a member of the Overseas Sciences Academy in 2000 for all his work. 

 *

    As the son of a veteran of the Free France (2nd DB) during WW2, and a modest family (masons), he studied as a salaried student (labourer, mason, handler, delivery boy, driver, etc.). Then, he learned the techniques of cinema during internships in companies and laboratories (shooting, sound recording, editing, development, printing and negative editing in film).

The camera is a Coutant Éclair 16mm.

    This led him to practice the cinematographic tools as they evolved, from the 35mm & 16mm film to the High Definition video (including Hi 8, Betacam SP, DVCam, etc. until 4K and 8K) On the citizen level:

    He has a long-standing volunteer contribution to associations (Ligue française de l'Enseignement, Solidarité Laïque).

in 2021, he completed a kind of cinematographic monument to art: the collection of 27 films

    During eight years, in order to serve France attacked by terrorism, he joined the Volunteer Citizens, then the Civil Reserve of the National Police, with the rank Expert at the Security/Judicial Police Service.

    In 2021, he completed a kind of cinematographic monument to art: the collection of 27 films L'Abécédaire artistique de Pierre Baqué.
