FILMING PROFESSIONALLY

WITH A CELLULAR PHONE

Today all smartphone owners film with it. Most often without any training. The result is disappointing: invisible images due to backlighting, black bands on both sides because the phone was held vertically and not horizontally during the shooting, tremors, inaudible sound, etc.

This Masterclass has been created to give to all people who film with their mobile phone the ability to obtain an optimal, professional result.

This Masterclass is a dense moment with alternating lessons and practical works. Il gives the beneficiaries of the training to, very quickly, acquire essential basics. The result is immediate and spectacular. The course is followed by a practice, by directed works. Each trainee films, then his exercice is projected on the screen, analyzed, criticized. A second practical works follows, analyzed the same, etc.

The audiences of the masterclass are varied: association leaders, teachers, middle and high school students, retirees, municipal staff, animators, etc. In fact it is possible to provide this teaching to all those who have a smartphone, from elementary schools to retirement homes.

It applies one of the fundamental rules: holding the phone horizontally
(and not vertically)

THE 8 BASIC RULES

1. Phone must be horizontal to film. NEVER vertical.

It must be held firmly.
Don’t move a bit.
Total immobility.

2. The light must be properly oriented to the character.

3. The character should not be in the middle of the image
but right or left.

4. For an American Plan, the top frame cut must be above the hair
and the frame bottom just above the knee.

5. The sound must be audible and windless.
No one should speak during the recording.
You have to ask for silence and turn off the radio, computer, TV, etc.

6. View the first shot to see if it is acceptable.

7. Shoot a second shot trying to do better.

8. If the second take is not suitable, repeat until a good result.

Masterclass "Filming with a mobile phone"
In a college in Saint Joseph.
With a sheet, the children show one of the fundamental rules:
holding the phone horizontally

.
To film, the phone stands horizontally.
Never vertically

A. THINKING AND PREPARING

. Before you start filming, you have to think about what you want to film. Define your intention. The most effective is to write a few lines starting with the sentence: «in this film, I intend to...»

. Then, it is necessary to document the subject that you are going to treat.

B. TECHNICAL

. Technical adjustments;

. Go into the camera settings on the phone.

. Select the highest resolution.

. Most smartphones are Full HD (1920 X 1080) start with this format.

. Only if your editing software allows it, your computer has the necessary power, and your phone offers this possibility, film in 4K.

. Hold the phone

HORIZONTALLY.

To film, the phone stands horizontally. Never vertically

. Do not hold the phone vertically. Never to film.

. Otherwise, if the telephone is held vertically, the rendered image is laid out.

. And also, if you hold the phone vertically, during the projection on TV screen, in room, etc. two black bands will appear on the right and left of the image that will not fill the whole screen.

. Stability:

. Use a selfie stick and hold firmly with both hands in monopod mode.
. Or, put the device firmly on a support. There are suitable tripods.
. Or alternatively, elbows to body, knees bent, relaxed.

. Duration of recording of plans;

. Between the recording trip and its interruption (from “engine!” to “turn off!”), each recorded element (each shot rotated) must be at least ten seconds.

. Framework/Composition: Third Party Rule

. The character should not be in the centre of the image, but left or right.

The character should not be in the centre of the image,
but left or right.

. The horizon should not be in the centre of the image.
The horizon should not be in the centre of the image.

. Take into account the plane values of the image grammar

. Transfer

. Transfer video files from the phone to a computer.

. Rename th shots without deleting their extension (example: landscape.mov)

. Empty the phone to free its memory.

. Assembly

. Start with a free editing tool (such as Windows Live Movie Maker) and its online tutorials.

. Useful accessories

. "Powerbank" battery backup.

. A selfie stick

. Table tripod for interviews.

. Directional external microphone.
. Wide angle lens set and fisheye.
. Listeners for sound control
. It is also interesting to equip with stabilizers that can integrate lighting and a directional microphone
