IN THE SEYCHELLES

SUMMARY OF THE PROGRAMM
Initial training and further training in audiovisual practices.
During two weeks, the lecture courses are followed by tutorials.
All the students make their first short films.
At the end of the training they are awarded diplomas.
The session is organized in the classroom of Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation.
Ten seychellois trainees, in parity women / men, followed the program of initial training/ intensification of capacities (how to think a movie, to write it, to realize it, shooting, sound recordings, editing, rights (laws), economy, etc.). Each of the students realized several movies. The training ended with the delivery of a diploma to each of the pupils.

History of the action
This action of cultural development arose from a dynamics introduced in 2017 by Mr. honorary Consul Gérard Le Chêne (Montreal, Quebec, Canada), Mrs Miera Damasy Savy Andriambao ictoria, Mahé, Seychelles) and Dr Didier Mauro (Filmmaker & professor CEO of the Tropics Cinema Institute). The program has an important international network : Canada, Europe, Madagascar, La Réunion. Two first sessions were held in 2018 & 2019.
The Indian Ocean Cinema Workshop in the Seychelles is twinned with the Indian Ocean Cinema Workshop in Madagascar, the Indian Ocean Cinema Workshop in La Réunion, and the West Indies Cinema Workshop.

Workshop. Day 01.
Morning : 08H30 to 13H in SBC. Lesson :
. Presentation of the Workshop and its context: the 21st century is audiovisual.
. Basics of audiovisual right and laws. Elements of image rights, music rights, iconographic rights. The Public Domain. The Creative Commons License.
. Elements of history of cinema & television. Screening of excerpts of films from Lumière & Méliès.
. How to film professionally with a cellular phone as technicians do in Bollywood, Hollywood, & Italy since 2006.The recorded shot.
. Practical exercice : The students film during 30' with their cellular phones.
Then, they comeback in the classroom for a projection and analysis of this exercise.
. Lesson : . Audiovisual narration bases : The shot, the scene, the sequence.
. Lesson : . Audiovisual grammar bases : The light. The sizes of shots. The frame of the picture.
. Screening of excerpts of films made by students of other workshops in other countries.
Afternoon : Field assignments.Students complete the required exercises : They must film several shots and try to apply the rules. Outdoors. Subject : A character is looking at very beautiful landscape.

. Practical exercice : Projection and analysis of the exercise the students have done the afternoon of the previous day. Correction of the errors.
. Lesson : .Audiovisual narration bases : how to think a story organized in a succession of shots of different sizes (from the long shot to the close up). The 3 main shots : long, medium and close.
. Lesson : Storytelling.How to Set the goal : which is the purpose of the narration?  
. Elements of history of cinema & television. Screening of the Kuleshov effect.
. Screening of films made by students of other workshops presenting a modern adaptation of the Kuleshov Effect
. Lesson : . Audiovisual grammar bases : Light & composition. The picture Rule of thirds.
Afternoon : Field assignments.Students complete the required exercises : They must film several shots and try to apply the rules, Outdoors and indoors. Subject : a modern adaptation of the Kuleshov Effect

. Practical exercice : Projection and analysis of the exercise the students have done the afternoon of the previous day. Correction of the errors.
Lesson : . Audiovisual grammar bases : The camera angles (shooting up and down). The camera movments (traveling, panning).
. Elements of history of cinema & television. Screening of excerpts of films from Bunuel & Dali.
. Practical exercice : Each student edits the shots he filmed, and completes a short film on the Kuleshov Effect.
. Screening of films made by students of other workshops about cellular phone addiction.
Afternoon : Field assignments.Students complete the required exercises.They must film several shots and try to apply the rules. Outdoors. Subject : Cellular phone addiction.

. Elements of history of cinema & television. Screening of excerpts of films from Vertov.
.Practical exercice : Each student edits the shots he filmed, and completes a short film Cellular phone addiction
. Screening of films made by students of other workshops about Ghosts in the night.
Afternoon : Field assignments.Students complete the required exercises.They must film several shots and try to apply the rules. Outdoors & indoors. Subject : Ghosts in the night.

. Practical exercice : Projection and analysis of the exercise the students have done the afternoon of the previous day. Correction of the errors.
. Lesson : Storytelling. The rule of the 3 unities : place, time, and action. Editing : The selection of the bests shots. Preparation of the editing. The editded shot. Assembling the rushes.
.Practical exercice : Each student edits the shots he filmed, and completes a short film Ghosts in the night.
. Screening of the Film Madagascar, our earth is in danger, made with a cellular phone during the Indian Ocean Workshop in Madagascar 2019. With presentation of the culture of Madagascar : famadihana, hira gasy opera, etc.
. Lesson : The character. Casting. For documentaries and for films with actors.
. Screening of films made by students of other workshops about heritage and culture.
Afternoon : Field assignments.Students complete the required exercises. They must find the location and the character for their main film. Subject :Culture & heritage in the Seychelles. At the same time they have to film several shots and try to apply the rules.They must also make get the form (of authorization of the character) signed.

. Lesson : Storytelling in documentary. Elements of method. Close questions and open questions.
. Elements of history of cinema & television. Screening of excerpts of films from XXIth century.
. Practical exercice : Editing of the students films.
Afternoon : Field assignments. Students complete the required exercises.They must film the shots for their main film. Subject :Culture & heritage in the Seychelles. Then, they have to select the bests shots, give them a name, and organize the preparation for editing.

. Lesson : Storytelling in documentary and in films with actors. Elements of method : locations, sets, costumes, colours.
Afternoon : Field assignments.Students complete the required exercises.They must film the lasts shots for their main film. Subject :Culture & heritage in the Seychelles.

. Lesson : Editing.The harmony between the cuts. The different kinds of rythms, the final cut.
. Practical exercice : Editing of the students films.
. Elements of history of cinema & television. Screening of excerpts of films from XXIth century.
Afternoon : Field assignments.Students complete the required exercises : The students document. Then they have to write the abstract of their film, and their biography.

. Discussion : The students read the abstracts.
. Lesson : Methods. Mixing the sounds, creation of the titles, of the credits, of the effects. The different kinds of masters (.MOV/Quicktime, Mpeg, etc.)
. Elements of history of cinema & television. Screening of excerpts of films from XXIth century.
. Practical exercice : Editing of the students films. Sounds mixing,effects, credits, titles.
Afternoon : Field assignments.Students complete the required exercises : Each student creates a Web-TV on Youtube. Broadcasting of the students films.

. Lesson :
. Production methods of audiovisual programmes: co financing, sponsoring, co-productions, self-production.
. Screening of the films of the students on the Web-TV they have created.
. Lesson : . Distribution methods of audiovisual programmes: Internet, festivals, televisions, cinemas, DVD, VOD, etc.
. Discussion : assessment of the workshop.
End of the afternoon : Public presentation of the works of the students. Graduation ceremony.
Press conference.
